Relics Frame Co. was started in 1995 by sister & brother team Krisi &
Michael Salyards, & friend of the two, Maggie Abdo. It began in the
basement of Krisi & Michael's mothers home & then moved to mom's back
yard & garage, just like you see on the UPS commercials.
Relics began only as a picture frame company. Michael, previously a
General Contractor, would end up with large amounts of salvaged wood
from job sites. With Krisi's encouragement, Michael turned the
salvaged wood into picture frames. Once the frames were constructed,
Krisi, a Marketing & Fashion major, & Maggie, a Business & Fine Arts
major, created designs on the frames. Each frame was a true original.
The three of them stock piled approximately 60 picture frames by may of
that year, loaded up their small pick up truck & drove to New York City
for the National Stationery Show. They took orders for approximately
250 picture frames & a new company was born.
After nearly 1 year of business, the company that began as three, was
now two. Krisi & Michael continued to pursue more trade shows &
developed a strong & consistent clientele. Their customers were not yet
completely satisfied. They loved the frames, but wanted more. They
would ask, do you make furniture? Michael, thinking himself already
overworked, would say NO!
They would ask again, Michael would again say NO! Krisi wanted to,
but Michael would just say NO! Until one day, they said OK! What
would you like us to make?
From that point on, their furniture line began to grow as more & more
pieces were introduced. Their one limitation was that the size of their
truck was not large enough to transport large furniture items, so all of
the items they designed were on a smaller scale. Unaware that they were
categorizing themselves by producing smaller furniture, Krisi & Michael
found themselves filling a niche in the children's furniture industry.
Some things just work out that way.
That is the story of how Relics Furniture & Frame Company Inc., began.
The company is now managed by Michael Salyards. He designs each piece &
typically creates each new prototype himself. Relics Furniture & Frame
Company currently has 12 employees, produces 3 lines of furniture &
over 50 individual furniture items with 12 standard finish options.
Relics continues to produce one style of picture frame that is available
in 12 finishes. Their primary focus is now the furniture.
Relics will be introducing it's fourth line of furniture within the next months.
It will be designed once Michael & his wife Cindy bring their first
child into this world. Their little girl is due in March 1, and will
serve as the design inspiration for a new line of little girl furniture.
Stay tuned!
